Culinary Competitions, New Product Awards & IDA Scottish Design College Awards

Scottish professionals from all areas of the hospitality sector once again came together at Scotland’s largest catering and tourism trade show ScotHot, to witness the most respected, and hotly contested, competitions in the Scottish catering profession.

One of the most popular and visited elements of the show were the 28th Scottish Culinary Championships, organised by the Federation of Chefs Scotland. These competitions draw  recognised top chefs and rising new talent from across Scotland to compete in a range of categories. In keeping with ScotHot’s dedication to highlighting up and coming talent, the extensive and highly respected competition includes a number of categories aimed at rising stars aged 30 and under.  These included the Modern Apprentice Junior Chef Skills Challenge won by Stacie O Meara of Aramark@Ageon UK and the Villeroy & Boch Junior Chef Of The Year won by Adam Handling of the Fairmont, St Andrews Bay.

The Future Talent Restaurant, sponsored by BISTO saw six Scottish Colleges go head to head in a live restaurant scenario, serving over 360 members of the industry over three days. The winner will be announced at a special award ceremony on 27 March at the Hilton Glasgow.

In the search for the nation’s most promising talent in the hospitality industry Danielle Lee, General Manager of the Crown Court Hotel, Inverness was awarded the title ScotHot Young Scottish Hotelier of the Year 2011, while WEST Brewery’s Bar & Restaurant General Manager, Liam Bedwell won ScotHot Young Scottish Restaurateur of the Year 2011, sponsored by Caterer.com

Other categories in the championships included Scottish Contract Catering Chef of The Year awarded to David Ward of Sodexo Prestige, TUCO Scotland and Northern Ireland which went to Craig Whitty, University of Glasgow, the Caterer.com Scottish Chef of the Year presented to Brian Canale of Heritage Portfolio, the QMS Lamb Challenge won by Stephen Waters Loch Lomond Golf Club and the Sustainable Fish Dish sponsored by Seafood Scotland which went to James Rehill Andrea Fairlie @ Gleneagles.

ScotHot also created the ScotHot Chef’s Hall of Fame, awarded for the first time in 2011 to Bruce Sangster and Stuart Cameron, recognising their achievements and dedication to the Scottish hospitality industry.

The IDA Scottish Design College Award was won by Glasgow School of Art. The presentation was made by Colin Watson of the IDA and Jim Hamilton of Graven images.

George Tsangari, Director of ScotHot commented: “We are thrilled with the response from the industry and delighted that so many representatives from the sector took time out of their busy schedule to make the show a success.”

“This was the 38th successful year of ScotHot, demonstrating the importance of an event dedicated to the Scottish industry and providing practical advice, valuable networking and genuine opportunities to boost sales and profits. The competition element of the show was again a huge draw with some of the best names in Scottish catering competing alongside young, up and coming talent.”

ScotHot marked the start of Scottish Tourism Week and was officially opened by Jim Mather MSP, who said during his opening speech: “Scotland’s Hospitality Industry employs over 215,000 people and generates £4 billion for the Scottish economy. Events such as ScotHot are vital for driving growth through collaboration, encouraging young people to get involved in the sector and championing an authentic Scottish product.

Every two years, ScotHot returns to Glasgow’s SECC to showcase the most inspirational, educational and entertaining elements of the hospitality sector. The biennial show not only features hundreds of exhibitors from all areas of the hospitality sector and varied seminar programmes offering visitors the chance to network and learn about latest industry trends, but also plays host to some of the most respected competitions in the Scottish hospitality world.
