Mairi Gougeon was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands in May 2021. Mairi Gougeon was previously a councillor for Brechin and Edzell, during which she was chairwoman of the East of Scotland European Consortium. She is a history graduate from the University of Aberdeen. Mairi was elected as the MSP for Angus North and Mearns in May 2016. She was appointed Minister for Public Health and Sport in December 2020.

Marc is 60 years young, prior to being appointed in May 2012 as the first CEO of The Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) he held many senior executive positions in the hotel, leisure and events industry both in the UK and abroad. He co-chairs Scotland’s Tourism and Hospitality Leadership Group (THILG) with Scotland’s Tourism Minister Ivan Mckee. The group being responsible for Scotland’s national tourism strategy Scotland Outlook 2030. Marc also chairs the National Food Tourism Leadership Board and is a board member of Apprenticeship in Hospitality Scotland Interface and an advisory board member of Springboard (Scotland) and TravelTech Scotland. Marc was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Birthday Honours for services to the Tourism industry in Scotland and in 2020 was awarded the “Fellowship” by the Scottish Hotel industry for his outstanding contribution to the industry.

Angela Halliday 

Angela Halliday, Director of Social Impact UK&I at Sodexo Live!

Based in Scotland, Angela joined Sodexo in 2008 having spent most of her career within the third sector. She has worked across a number of strategic development and operational roles - all of which have been focused on tackling societal, economic and environmental priorities. Angela was appointed as Sodexo’s Director of Social Impact UK & Ireland in 2019. She works alongside Sodexo’s CEOs and colleagues on how to continually embed the way in which Sodexo creates a positive impact for its People, Planet, Places and Partners. Social Value is at heart of Sodexo’s corporate strategy of ‘creating a better everyday for everyone to build a better life for all’. During the session Angela will bring to life the importance of Social Value to business and the community, and Sodexo creates value through a ‘social impact lens’; ensuring thinking, planning and decision making is stimulating by always considering the overall impact on society, local communities and our environment.

Ian Smith 

Ian Smith, Head of Corporate Relations at Diageo

Ian Smith is Head of Corporate Relations, Scotland for Diageo, the world’s leading Scotch whisky company. Ian joined Diageo in 2010 and is responsible for the company’s corporate reputation in Scotland. He was inducted as a Keeper of the Quaich (the international society devoted to celebrating Scotch whisky) in recognition of his work on behalf of the Scotch whisky industry in 2017 and in 2022 took on the role of Chair of the Management Committee of Keepers of the Quaich. He is a non-Executive Director on the board of the Scotch Whisky Experience and a member of the Public Affairs & Communications Committee of the Scotch Whisky Association. Before joining Diageo Ian worked for Royal Mail Group, where he was also responsible for media and stakeholder relations in Scotland. Before going into corporate affairs, Ian worked as a news and political journalist with several national newspapers, including The Herald, The Scotsman, the Daily Record and the Daily Mail, covering events at the Westminster and Holyrood parliaments.

Kelly is the dynamic leader at the helm of The Springboard Charity across the UK and Ireland. Previously the Director for Scotland, NI, Ireland and North England, a post she has held since 2014. She has driven remarkable growth and vastly improved the impact of the Springboard Charity improving the prospects for employment of tens of thousands of young people as well as unemployed or otherwise disadvantaged adults within hospitality and tourism, in so doing helping the industry raise its profile as an employer and access fresh talent. Her passion for the industry combined with a natural desire to help people, has meant Kelly’s influence has seen the charity flourish and win numerous awards. Kelly’s ethos is action orientated and getting things done, but is a stickler for quality, practicality, and collaboration – working closely with key partners from across the industry, government and other stakeholders. Prior to Springboard, Kelly spent 17 years with Thomas Cook and was one of the Founding Members of the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity established in 2009. She is the Chair of the Scottish Tourism Alliance Tourism Skills Group; A member of the Tourism and Hospitality industry leadership group, a Judge for the Scottish Thistle awards, a member of BII Scotland Council and a board member of Apprenticeship in Hospitality Scotland. Her other passion is football!

Lawrence Durden, Tourism Sector Manager at Skills Development Scotland

Following 4 years at the Scottish Hotel School Lawrence graduated in 1984 with a degree in hotel management and worked for 10 years in various hospitality management roles across the UK. Since 2011 he has been Skills Development Scotland’s Tourism Sector Manager working with industry stakeholders, partners, and employers to identify and address the key skills issues that the tourism sector faces. Lawrence is a member of the Tourism and Hospitality Skills Group in Scotland and for the last two years has been a representative on the Scottish Tourism Emergency Response Group.

Steven Witt has a background in product design and change management, he joined the commercial catering sector in 2001 and has been responsible for driving forward a series of new product improvements specifically managing food waste. With benchmarking so many products within the industry his knowledge of waste management products is unequalled. Steven is also the current FEA’s (Foodservice Equipment Association) Food Waste and Fats, Oils and Grease committee chairperson and has worked closely with stakeholders to advise and evaluated food waste product solutions. Steven launched Ecofast Environmental UK Ltd in 2019 following a product redesign working closely with FM’s, kitchen design houses, end clients, manufacturers, and consultants to offer consultancy and support whilst providing world beating food waste reduction equipment. Ecofast’s goal is to end food waste through innovation in the commercial catering sector whilst lowering the impact of Ecofast as a manufacturer on the environment. Steven Witt is a keen traveller, walker, skier, golfer, rugby supporter, clay shooting and angler. He is happily married, and is the proud father to his son and daughter. He lives in rural Shropshire, England involving himself heavily in the local community, local events and businesses.

Craig Burn

With a strong track record and a career spanning over 25 years with some of Scotland’s leading leisure and sport organisations, Craig is regarded as one of the countries most experienced and accomplished sports management professionals. Craig spent his early career within the hospitality and commercial leisure industry, before moving into sports management and senior leadership roles within local, regional and national organisations. Prior to joining the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in April 2021, Craig was Chief Executive at Scottish Cycling (the national governing body) for the past decade. Under his leadership, the organisation and sport successfully undergone transformational change resulting in significant growth in membership, participation and commercial revenues as well as developing a club and talent system that continues to deliver sustained medal success from Scottish athletes on the world stage. The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships have big ambitions to not only deliver an outstanding mega event (combining 13 separate UCI World Championship disciplines) but to also celebrate the unique power of the bike and all it can bring to our everyday lives. Craig’s priority is to lead to coordination of a One Scotland approach for cycling in collaboration with Scottish Government, national agencies, local authorities and wider stakeholders across six priority areas; participation, sport, transport, tourism, industry and events. Not only will the Championships provide a global opportunity to shine a spotlight on Scotland and the UK, but it will provide a unique platform and catalyst for positive change before, during and after the event for decades to come. Craig is a vocal advocate with a huge passion for cycling and how physical activity and sport more generally, can make a positive contribution to people and wider society.

With over 20 years’ experience working in Scottish tourism, Gwen recently took on the role of Chief Marketing Officer at 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. Her goal is to maximise awareness of this world first mega-cycling event, with sold out tickets and high attendance at free events. More importantly, she wants to ensure tourism businesses and communities throughout Scotland benefit from both the actual event and the increased profile and investment in cycling, working closely with VisitScotland and wider partners to raise the profile of cycling in Scotland. Gwen is also a non-executive Director of Edinburgh College, and is a strong advocate on the benefits of cycling for physical and mental well being.

A keen mountain biker with 3 awesome children, who keep him young. He has been involved in the Hospitality & Tourism industry for over 40 years. Gordon is Chair of Hospitality Health, a charity he founded that supports the industry and also Vice Chair of Experience Glasgow, which supports the tourism sector in the city. He attended primary school in Strachur, Argyll (God's country), and has worked in Inveraray and Tarbert, Loch Fyne as well as a spell on cruise ships as an Assistant Purser. An optimistic person, who believes a positive mind leads to a positive outcome, and you should strive to be the best at whatever you do, whether a professor, nurse, administrator or a mechanic.

Kris Hall, Founder and Chief Executive of The Burnt Chef Project

Kris founded The Burnt Chef Project in May 2019, a not-for-profit community interest focussed on people-focussed sustainability. After 12 years of working in hospitality and experiencing mental illness, Kris launched the Project to tackle the stigma of mental health within hospitality. Through corporate training sessions and merchandise sales the Project grew and now provides free-to-access 24/7 support services as well as free health and wellbeing training.

Kerry Donaghty

Kerry Donaghy, Respitality Manager at Shared Care Scotland

Kerry Donaghy is the Respitality Manager with national carer organisation Shared Care Scotland. Kerry’s professional career in the third sector spans thirteen years, which includes experience in the homelessness sector. On a voluntary basis, Kerry has previously served as a Special Constable with Police Scotland, and currently volunteers with Scouts Scotland as a Beaver Leader. Over the past ten years, Kerry’s career initially focussed on the support and training for unpaid, focussing in on the need and importance of short breaks of unpaid carers in Scotland for the past six years. The Respitality initiative, which Kerry manages on a national level, has been part of the Scottish social tourism movement since 2015, and has supported over 4000 unpaid carers to take a short break free of charge, thanks to the support of over 400 businesses in the Scottish tourism industry. Kerry resides in South Perthshire and has two young boys with her long term partner. Her favourite Scottish place to visit is anywhere up the West Coast, but in particular, Arisaig!

Amelia Whitelaw joined Interface as Director in August 2022. She brings to her leadership position success with leading academic institutions in developing, promoting, and implementing multi-organisational and international collaborative programmes. Prior to joining Interface, Amelia worked with London Business School (LBS) for 11 years. She was the founding Executive Director of Wheeler Institute for Business and Development, an institute seeking to apply business expertise and research to social and economic challenges in developing countries. In her other roles at LBS, as the former Executive Director of Global Outreach and Director Global Experiences, she leveraged the School’s work and networks to increase the profile of the School and to generate interest in degree programmes, and to create innovate experiential curricula. Prior to joining LBS, she provided the vice chancellor and other senior executives of the Australian National University (ANU) with strategic, operational policy support in developing its international programme.

Marie Hendry

Marie Hendry, Depute Director (External Engagement & Partnerships) at The Open University Scotland

Marie joined the Open University in Scotland in July 2017 as Depute Director (External Engagement and Partnerships) overseeing the development of the Open University’s work with external stakeholders and partners across the length and breadth of Scotland. This includes partnerships with employers to design innovative workforce development and upskilling solutions including the OU in Scotland’s skills- based response to the economic impacts of the pandemic, our partnerships with all of Scotland’s colleges, schools engagement, union learning, community development, employability and knowledge exchange. With a legal background, Marie has held senior positions in a number of private sector Financial Services companies, in charities and Higher Education, including as Commercial Director of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) and Chief Operating Officer of financial inclusion charity Grand Central Savings. Marie has worked in a number of externally-facing senior roles in Scottish Universities and has expertise in Fundraising & Alumni Relations, Business Development, Research and Innovation and Executive Education. An Open University MBA graduate, Marie has previously held a number of Board positions and is currently a member of International Development Charity, SCIAF’s Public Engagement Committee.

Anna Leask

Anna Leask, Professor of Tourism Management and Tourism Research Centre Lead at Edinburgh Napier University 

As Professor of Tourism Management at Edinburgh Napier University, Anna’s teaching and research interests combine and lie principally in the areas of international visitor attraction management, heritage tourism and destination management. As Lead for the recently established Tourism Research Centre, her role involves working collaboratively across the university, college and tourism sectors to provide research and graduates with the relevant skills for sustainable tourism development.

Scott Inglis

Scott Inglis, Commercial Director at Fishers Laundry Group 

Scott Inglis has commercial responsibility for Fishers Laundry Group which is Scotland’s/North of England’s largest commercial laundry and textile rental business, servicing the hospitality sector. Scott also directly oversees the specialist Workwear and Cleanroom division. Fishers washes, dries and irons 2 million pieces of linen every week, with an annual turnover of over £40m. Fishers operates five Plants in Coatbridge, Perth, Cupar, Newcastle and Livingston with over 800 employees. Scott has taken personal responsibility for positioning the Fishers business as an integral, and vital, part of the Scottish tourism industry and for ensuring that Fishers plays a full role in the sector. Passionate about the role that Fishers plays in supporting this industry, he leads the partnership approach to ensure that Fishers play their part helping the sector deliver. Fishers work with VisitScotland in supporting the National Thistle Awards and with the individual regions to ensure support is also provided locally. As a qualified Accountant, Scott was Fishers’ Group Finance Director for over two years and, as a consequence, has a deep understanding of the financial levers that are important to a business operating within the Scottish hospitality sector.

Louis Arnold is the Head of Operations at Beer Line Wizard, a company that works to bring cost-effective, sustainable solutions to hospitality businesses through innovative beer line cleaning methods and advanced cellar management systems. With 10 years of experience in project management and data recording, Louis has brought a detailed and analytical approach to this niche industry within the hospitality industry. Having been raised in a small village pub, Louis has seen the detrimental effects of soaring beer and energy costs on hospitality venues. Working alongside Beer Line Wizard founder David Arnold, Louis strives for impactful change in this industry by drastically reducing beer and energy waste, in order to reduce costs, increase profits, and improve environmental impact for all hospitality businesses across the UK.
